Shaw Television paid a visit to the grounds of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village (KBPV) of Pincher Creek Alberta Saturday, December 10, 2012. Staff, directors and volunteers were all on hand to discuss various different points of interest about the village.

Museum to hold outdoor curling event

Fran Cyr talked about the ice rink that he was flooding. This year, in addition to having skating parties and access to the rink during our regular hours of operation, there will be a Turkey Shoot for curling early in the new year. Both regulation rocks and the home-made rock that was used in some of the earliest games of curling in Pincher Creek will be thrown during this event. This rock has been traditionally displayed at the Pincher Creek Curling Rink and is property of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. Made by an innovative pioneer and avid curler, it is literally a fieldstone that has had a handle attached to it. This event will be for the benefit of both the curling club and KBPV. It will also give an exotic twist to those that have never had the opportunity to curl outside. Tracy Glen spoke of the upcoming Christmas Market that will be held the evening of Friday, December 23rd, talking of the various vendors that will be showing their wares. The gift shop and the hours that the village is open to the public were brought up. Ray Degan told of the transportation display, and Pauline Breeze talked about the general store area and her duties as cataloguer.

Shaw Television does this as a public service for their watchers. Those that subscribe to Shaw have a channel that shows local and community stories, Channel 12 in Pincher Creek. Videographer Lyn Ens acts as their roving reporter covering a large portion of southwestern Alberta. Travelling to the communities of Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass, Taber, Claresholm, and Cardston, Ens helps promote not-for-profit events and community news free of charge.

Ens is well acquainted with camera work, having worked in that field with Shaw for 12 years. Ens did take a hiatus for a year to pursue other interests. At the end of the year, he chose to return to Lethbridge, and Shaw. "I love doing this too much. I couldn't leave it." When asked what it was that Shaw looked for he answered that "We look for interesting stories for the public." He stated that it is best when it makes good television, with both a strong dialogue and good visual imagery to make a story. Ens has covered Kootenai Brown a number of times over the years and expressed that it is one of his personal favourite places to do a story on. On Monday, November 14 the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village received a significant donation from Elwin and Marlene Eddy, Jim Eddy Junior, and Deborah Vogel (Eddy) in the form of a 1929 Chevrolet Coach automobile. The escape vehicle of choice for prohibition-era gangsters, this was one of the fastest production machines of its era, and also one of the sturdiest. It was propelled by General Motors' first 6-cylinder overhead valve engine, and had GM's first steel disc rims. Old-timer's of the day said they would never buy a car without spokes, particularly in this area, as the winds might blow it off the road.

Elwin and his father Jim Eddy purchased the car from the original owner George E. Searle in Calgary in 1962 for $100.00. Searle, a former rancher, stored the car in his leaky Calgary garage for 10 years, and turned the engine over 10 times a week, with the crank, to prevent it from seizing. When Elwin and Jim bought it, it had only a little over 20,000 original miles on it. It presently has 31,193 miles on it. The car suffered some damage from Searle's leaky garage. Most of the wood in the roof and both door frames were rotten. Unfortunately, the main door posts were too damaged to get a good pattern from them, and the replacements are therefore as close as the Eddy's could estimate. Elwin and Jim had to get the stale gas out of the tank, the gas lines, the carb, etc. According to Elwin very little else was needed, except for new oil in the motor, transmission, and rear end, and a new covering for the roof.

Metis mark the death of Louis Riel with flag-raising ceremony at museum

A respectful crowd assembled to celebrate the raising of the Metis flag over the grounds of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek on November 16, 2011. They were gathered on the anniversary of the death of Louis Riel, who fought to have the offspring of European and Aboriginal parents recognized by the Canadian government. A prayer was said by Karen Gamache, President of the Metis Local 1880 Association, and then everyone went outside to watch Metis Youth Advisory Committee Leader Shinaya Gamache raise the flag, with the help of Vice President Kim LeBlanc of the local association.

Metis Nation Region Three President Marlene Lanz was on hand to speak of the struggles of her people, the death of Louis Riel, and the future of the Metis Nation. MD Reeve Rod Zielinski and Deputy Mayor Lorne Jackson were also in attendance to pay their respects.

After the flag raising and speeches, everyone was invited to enjoy a social luncheon visit inside the museum's Pioneer Place. Lanz brought the special gift of a Metis sash-bag to be given to Dykota Letourneau, a winner of Great Kids Award for Alberta. Letourneau has been a dedicated volunteer for the Metis Association, and Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. Gamache invited those that have great kids in their lives to nominate them for this award. "Often we forget to recognize and reward kids for the great work they do, and this community has many great kids," she said.

Throughout most of the day, the mobile Metis Nation Association bus was stationed outside the museum grounds. This bus travels to communities and offers employment and educational opportunities tips and suggestions for Metis people from employment councillors.

Metis Week celebrations to be held at Museum

The Métis Nation Of Alberta Assoc. Local Council Chinook 1880 invite you to join them in a Celebration of Métis week .
There will be a Flag Raising at 12:00 Noon at the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Museum in Pincher Creek, followed by a Lunch Social.

In 1884, Louis Riel was asked to negotiate for the Saskatchewan Métis as he had done at Red River. Riel saw opportunity to create a Métis homeland, but Canada sent soldiers instead of negotiators. Metis resistance was defeated at Batoche in May 1885. Riel was found guilty of high treason and hanged in Regina. Riel's life ended November 16, 1885.

Today, Louis Riel is widely regarded as the Father of Manitoba.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village Halloween

Staff and Faculty of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek gave out candy to around 20 kids this Halloween. Hanging on the door outside was a sign that read "knock if u dare!" Those that did dare were met at the door by a bear that was dismembering an unfortunate human hiker, jack-o-lanterns, spiders and ghosts. This was too much for one little trick or treater, who was consoled somewhat by the treats he recieved.

Pirates, ladybugs, ninjas, goblins, ghoulies, princesses and vampires all were welcomed, and given treats, before going off on their next candy-seeking adventure.

The Allred Family recently dropped in to see something that they donated to the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village many years ago. Kootenai Brown's Cabin was on their land, and rather than tear it down, they donated it to the museum in the 1970s.
Jim and Lauretta lived with their parents next door to Kootenai Brown and Kootenai Brown used to rock Lauretta’s brother to sleep when he was a baby.

Hit and run driver smashes KBPV fence

Sometime in the late evening or early morning hours of September 30 and October 1 the fence at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village sustained signifcant damage. RCMP Officers responded to the corner of Frederick Street and James Avenue at the time of the incident but were unable to determine who was responsible. There would be significant damage to the vehicle involved. Anyone with any information regarding this 'hit and run' incident is asked to Contact Pincher Creek RCMP or Tracy at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village will be holding most of our Alberta Arts Days programmes at Pioneer place, the front administration building (which is undergoing extensive exterior maintenance). Most of the KBPV events will be free to attend.

Authors
Free programming includes five local authors on Friday, September 30 from 11 am to 2 pm on Friday. Each author will have their own table to allow them to converse with interested readers.
Authors include:

Eryka Bruder, the 11 year-old author of "Lillian's Worn Out Brown Boots"
Francis Riviere, author of "Washing at the Creek", an acclaimed book based on growing up in the Twin Butte area.
Christopher Hoare , author of the Iskander high-fantasy series, including his latest book, "Rast", a novel available in both soft cover and e-book form.
Curator Farley Wuth, author of "The History That Almost Wasn't: Chronicles of Pincher Creek's Ill-Fated Railway History" who is currently busy updating "From Prairie Grass to Mountain Pass", the definitive history of the Pincher Creek area and its people.
Murray Pura has written five non-fiction and three fiction novels as well as many short stories. He will have most of his works on hand, including his latest, "The White Birds of Morning". Two new Pura books are coming out in 2012, "The Wings of Morning" and "Virginia City."

The Town of Pincher Creek is looking for volunteers that are interested in the heritage of our community

The Town of Pincher Creek and the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society (PCDHS) are undertaking a survey of pre-1950’s buildings in the community. The architecture, condition and history of over 300 buildings will to be recorded on site survey forms along with current photographs. Volunteers will work in teams and visit assigned locations. This project is to be completed over the next year.

This project, called “Creating a Future for Alberta’s Historic Places”, needs people who are willing to put in some time towards creating a record for posterity of early Pincher Creek. This project is flexible and can accomodate the volunteer's schedule.
Training that covers how to complete forms and determine the architectural styles, type of windows, foundations, roof structures, etc. will be provided free of charge. All materials necessary will be provided.

Volunteer Requirements:
• To have an interest in construction/ architecture/building styles
and local history.
• To be well organized and able to work with public and fellow volunteers.
• May be a resident of Town or local area and able to give a few hours
per week or month.

Over the winter months the project needs researchers and data entry volunteers.

Claude Choe to perform for Alberta Arts Days

Renowned conductor, composer, and performer Claude Choe began receiving international attention at the Salerno International Film Festival in Italy in 1993 where his ‘Une Poignee de Temps’ won the Best Film Music Award among 200 international nominees from 120 countries. Now, Choe’s own compositions are best-known in movie and television drama soundtracks, often performed by orchestras.

Choe will be performing classical and original romantic pieces on classical guitar at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village (KBPV) in Pincher Creek on the evening of Friday, September 30.
This will be a ticketed event with limited seating, costing $10.00 per person. Choe will be autographing copies of his CDs after the performance, and a wine bar will be available.
Choe's performance is only one aspect of the many events being staged throughout Pincher Creek to celebrate Alberta Arts Days, which runs from September 30 to October 2, 2011.
Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, Metis Local 1889, The Pincher Creek Municipal Library, Pincher Creek Co-op and Ranchland Mall, and The Oldman River Rose Society have all been working independently and together to create a fantastic assortment of events to be enjoyed.

Graveyard Tour Success

Last night, the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village put on its first ever Historical Graveyard Tour, and it was a complete success! Those who attended met first at the museum and then made their way over to the Pioneer Cemetery where they enjoyed interesting and informative live dramatizations of the lives of some of our pioneer families. We had full attendance and everyone had a great time--the weather was perfect, and Roy Smyth brought his hearse along for everyone to see. We hope for our next Graveyard Tour to be just as successful as the first.

Cyr house moves to KBPV

What a big day this will be. We will be having the Cyr House moved in on Monday, just as promised on Canada Day. Look for updates and photos! It will be coming in down Main Street, and then turning at the bridge and going to its new home on the east side of the grounds.

Thanks to all that will be making this happen. Crews from Fortis and Shaw will be moving lines, Ridge Runner will be the pilot vehicle, and the RCMP will be controlling traffic, to name few. Once on the grounds, it will become work for the house movers to put it on a new foundation, just behind the existing Cox house.

Opening ceremonies start at 11 am, with a Colour Party from Royal Canadian Legion #43 and Flag Raising with Cadets, Fort MacLeod # 2309, followed by guest speakers.
There will be music provided by Supreme Sound, a fantastic transportation display, including Ford, Endurotek, The Pincher Creek Fire Department, and The Pincher Creek Cruzers and private citizens. We will have two bouncy tents including the bouncy obstacle course, activities for the kids, farmers market, and an antique sale. Don't forget to visit the animals, and ride on a real Metis Red River Cart. Farley will be reading and signing his book, The History That Almost Wasn't, Chronicles of Pincher Creek's Ill-Fated Railway History. Concession will be available.

The museum will be closed after 3 p.m. this day.

KBPV at the Pincher Creek Co-op AGM

Pincher Creek and District Historical Society President Colleen Cyr was at the Pincher Creek Co-op Annual General Meeting with KBPV Curator Farley S. Wuth. The vibrant duo were explaining an upcoming project at the museum that will see the east entrance of the Beere Hall transformed into a representation of the Co-op's long history in this community, in three dimension facade. Three years ago we accomplished a similar feat with the west facade. This, along with other big projects in the works, including moving three historical structures onto the grounds this year, will greatly add to the "village" atmosphere of our museum.
We will be selling advertising space in the newly expanded village, including having companies pay for the privilege of having their logos painted on milk bottles or burlap sacks.. We felt this would be a nice way to integrate sponsorship into our displays, very visible but not distracting from the atmosphere we are creating.

Remembering our friend Stuart Lepard

This week we mourn the passing of a Pincher Creek icon. Stu Lepard was a dynamic member of our community, and a good friend and neighbor of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. He is dearly missed.

The funeral for Stuart James Lepard will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Pincher Creek.

MLA Evan Berger presented a cheque for $11,432 last week to the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society, which oversees the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. The funds will go towards a large project planned for the museum grounds. Several historical buildings and new exhibits will be added this year. What is Happening at the Village?

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is forward thinking and dynamic for a home town museum. We have many projects on the go, designed to make this a better facility for tourists, and the people in the community that we serve. Over the last several years, we have upgraded, painted, planned, polished, planted, cleaned and upgraded. We have updated the original museum building, creating a false front that pays tribute to many of the buildings that were on Main Street Pincher Creek, both before and after the 1913 fire ravished our community. We have taken over the old trailer park and transformed it into a gorgeous community garden, tree nursery and outdoor learning center for ecological seminars. There is a learning center indoors, as well as the Fishburn School for the authentic experience for educational tours. The addition of the Farmers’ Market on Fridays and the animals seasonally have also been a huge success.

This upcoming year will see even more change and innovation. We will be bringing in three unique buildings that will be honouring pioneer families of Cyr, and Gietz. These major projects will expand our grounds for new exhibits.

In 2011 we will be opening two new major exhibits, The Grand Opening of the Transportation Display will be during our Canada Day Celebrations, featuring two cars that are here under the graces of local resident and Director, Ray Degan. His Model A and Model T Fords will be joining a special car from The Eddy Family, a permanent exhibit that will be showing off with local car clubs and dealerships and interested owners that will be showing for the day.

The Grand opening of The General Store will be June 10th, coinciding with the opening of Prairie ‘n Peaks, a 10 day quilt festival that is in cooperation with various businesses in both the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek, as this quilt festival will be held in both communities. Crowsnest Museum, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, The Cozy Corner, Bloomin’ Inn and Country Encounters, Shaggy Dog have been working tirelessly to create a fantastic festival that textile enthusiasts will love to be at. ATB, The Polish Center, the Crowsnest Seniors Center have played part by being venues, organizers, and major sponsors in this event.

Our annual events such as the Canada Day, (July 1), Community Garden Bus Tour, ( July 23), Antiques on The Creek (July 30-Aug 1) and Harvest Festival have all been well appreciated in the past, and will continue this year. Something new this year is the Graveyard Tour that will happen in July. Held from 10pm-12am during the night of the full moon, this will bring chills to those looking for a bit of adventure with a twist of history.

Less visible, but even more importantly, we have had people working feverishly cataloguing and doing research. We will be upgrading to an entirely new cataloguing system that will help to modernize our facility. This will be a steep learning curve, but will be worthwhile because it will make the system an integrated and user-friendly system. Once it is in place and fully integrated it will make it easier for museum staff to help the public with research requests. Farley Wuth, our Curator has been working on “Prairie Grass to Mountain Pass” updating the book that was originally published in 1974, and expanding it to include to the 1940s. It is now in the editing phase. Get ready to enjoy a good book, or in this case 2, as this research has expanded it to a two volume edition.

We have served the community of Pincher Creek since 1966, and are always striving for better ways to make this a better place for all who visit.

Lovely local couples enjoyed a dinner and dance at the Bloomin' Inn, with all proceeds going towards the "General Store" display planned for the Beere Hall at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.
Phil Lethbrige provided the music for an after dinner dance, with cohorts Jackie Therriault and Rene Desjardins. Volunteers from the Pincher Creek Chinooks hockey organization were on hand to provide safe passage home to those who needed it afterwards.

Friday, December 10th, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek 'broke the ice' on the new outdoor skating rink with two young hockey groups and their families.(Photos to follow in separate email.) The weather was perfect for the occasion. The kids and parents had hot chocolate with them to warm up. One of the children said that it was really different skating outdoors.

Kootenai Brown will have two upcoming skating parties, one on Boxing Day, and one on December 29th. Both of these dates run from 3pm-7pm, allowing the chance to skate under the stars, and have a true outdoor skating adventure. Both days has admission of $2, and for an additional $2 you can cook your own hotdog over a fire and have hot chocolate.

On the 29th, Come and skate with a real NHL icon. Dean Kennedy, 1982–1995. He played for the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers. He will be in attendance, and available for autographs and photos.

Tipi in the Village

Our plan of closing to the public on Thursdays to make a "Work Bee" day has been very successful. The latest project day has brought about a tipi that is set up right in Pioneer Place. It is currently keeping company with two antique model Fords owned by Ray Degan that will be featured in our transportation display That will be opening in the summer.

By spring, the accumulation of all this work will be noted in significant changes that will be visible to all that come here.

Moonlight Madness Parade

Moonlight Madness was a great success. The public escaped the cold in the Craft Show that had a huge variety of vendors and a happy crowd milling about. The parade had over 30 floats, with everything from old fashioned sleighs to an ice princess. Of course, towards the end of the parade, that jolly old elf, Santa appeared to make sure that everything was going well. Entertainment from Chris Davis, Friends in Sync, and Alexandra Morgan happened down at Cenotaph Park. Tim Hortons donated hot chocolate for everyone, and it was greatly appreciated. Thank you Timmy's! If that did not keep you warm, there were the hot deals in the stores. The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Pincher Creek. I talked to Santa for a few minutes, and he told me that almost all of Pincher Creek is on the nice list, at least so far.

Harvest Festival Contests

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village was inundated with scarecrows for the Harvest Fest! We had over one hundred entries for the scarecrow coloring contest, and several for the Build a Scarecrow Contest. We truly got to see the artistic flair of many of our young citizens. You can see the great efforts here. It was impossible to chose the "Best" so we went with "Favorites".

Remember, even if you did not win a prize everyone did a great job.

We are truly appreciative to the fine management and staff at 7-11 who donated prizes for both of these contests. I am sure that all the people who received prizes appreciated them as well!

Saturday, July 24 dawned bright and sunny – a great day for special events at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village!!

At 10:00 am the First Student Canada bus rolled up to the curb in front of Pioneer Place. Eighteen eager gardeners found their seats and we were off to see seven yards and gardens in our community. The morning yards were lovely and all had a great time. The bus came back to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village for lunch catered and donated by the Bloomin Inn. Our guest speaker Joni Macfarland taught our group some of the uses and qualities of herbs zoned for our area. The bus loaded up and we were off to view another four yards. Pincher Creek has such beautiful yards we should all be proud.

GARDEN TOUR

While the gardeners were viewing the flowers, a wedding was going on in the Father Lacombe Hermitage. A couple from Rimbey said their vows while their friends and family looked on. The group then enjoyed a catered reception (Simply Catering) and an enjoyable evening here at the Village.

Saturday evening also brought our local Creek Cruzers car club after their Show & Shine day at the Town Office grounds. About 40 Cruzers set up and enjoyed a BBQ and some cool drinks after their busy day.

It was a great day as you can see from the photos! Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is a multi-use community facility. Family events, reunions, meetings and workshops – we have the space and venue to help you with your event!

The money raised will contribute to our brand new Transportation Exhibit, including “Balanced on Two Wheels”, featuring a wide assortment of rare and antique bicycles. Other parts of the Transportation Exhibit include our new Sicilian donkeys, Leon and Violet, as well as Ray Degan’s antique cars.

Canadian Spirit
July 1st, Thursday 10:00am - 3pm
Admission is free. Flag raising and flag waving, music and games for the kids. We will have music and cake for everyone. This is a day of celebration and showing your pride! Concession will be available.

Community and Garden Bus Tour
July 24th, Saturday 10am - 4pm
Meet the bus at Kootenai Brown at 10am, tour lovely gardens of the area and return for a catered lunch at the village. The tour continues with even more lovely gardens. Door prizes, guest speaker, fun for all. Refreshments will be available on the bus. Advanced tickets only.

Antiques on The Creek
August Long Weekend, July 31 - Aug 2nd, 10am to 5pm -A variety of different vendors will be on site from across Alberta, bringing their wares for you to peruse. The one stop antique shopping experience. There will be scheduled tours of the historic cabins and lots to see and do! Admission is free!

Harvest Festival
September 17th - 18th, Friday and Saturday, -We wrap up summer and prepare for the winter. This family friendly festival honours the artists of our area that help to keep the individualistic pioneering spirit alive. Come and celebrate with your community.

Pioneer Market at KBPV

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is pleased to host the Pioneer Market again this year. Every Friday we have 12 vendors on site selling meats, vegetables, crafts, jams, jellies, jewelry, heritage plants, and unique items of all kinds. The market starts at 10 am and finishes at 2 pm.
While you're there be sure to check out our gift shop which features books of local relevance/by local authors, and locally sourced crafts, notions, and foodstuffs. We have a new shipment of moccasins, and we're happy to report the the Ewelme Colony has taken over the Lyons Honey business, and is continuing to supply us with the wonderfully clear nectar our regular customers know and love.

Seniors Pass to Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village would like to invite the Fred Huddleston Seniors to visit our grounds.

If anyone would like to participate there are gardening duties, interpretive tours and assistance to the visitors to the Village. Or just stop in and enjoy our venue while having lunch or reading a book.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village celebrated the Spring Festival in fine style this year by featuring Sugar Shack.

The tapping of the maple trees, done in the spring when the sap starts to run, creating a chain of work to have sugar throughout the year. We even had a sugaring off, a highlight of this spring event since trees have first been tapped, and we cooked down sap to syrup. As the weather chose to be very favorable for outside play, we were lacking the snow, and had to turn to modern refrigeration for the ice blocks made the boiling syrup into a taffy treat.

Seniors to toddlers, everyone that I talked to had a great time. Even technical difficulties were met with ingenuity and good humor. People enjoyed the meal, the music, the atmosphere. It was truly a time where all age groups got together and celebrated, just as it has been since the early in Canadian history.

Music was a combination of traditional and original, English and French. We got to see three talented artists on stage together, and preforming solo.
Afterward, the open mic after the show allowed people local and and from across Canada to join up on stage and show their skills. This added to the feel of a traditional gathering.

Children got a songwriting workshop with Danielle French, Maple taffy treats, story telling, tag, and other games. There was a lot of laughter both in and outside.

Special thanks to Treasury Branch, and AAME for their financial contributions, Pincher Creeks very own Co-op and Sobeys for donating towards the brunch, and a special thanks to the Katimavik participants that both volunteered and attended.

Thanks to you, the people who came out to this event and made it fun for everyone.

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME

Step back into those bygone days of the Western Canadian frontier! The Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village (KBPV) is southern Alberta’s premiere heritage facility, a must-stop for any person seriously interested in the pioneer past of south-western Alberta. “Antiques on the Creek” at KBPV offers a fantastic opportunity to visit this lovely facility during the August long weekend. There will be a number of antique vendors from across western Canada showing their wares on site.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is nestled along the tree shaded Pincher Creek as it quietly meanders through our picturesque ranching settlement. It truly offers vintage glimpses into our glorious past. Memories of pioneer life from more than a century ago are showcased on six acres of well manicured gardened grounds on the Canadian Prairies. Come see what Pincher Creek has to offer!

Sixteen heritage buildings adorn these eye-catching grounds. Our thematic icon is the 1883 log three-room cabin that once belonged to our beloved John George “Kootenai” Brown, the Irish-born Prairie Canadian outdoorsman who became the first Dominion Park Warden at Waterton Lakes. Flanking this structure on one side is a one-room log cabin once owned by the Ward brothers (founded in 1897), and on the other the Northwest Mounted Police Outpost cabin established in 1887 along the banks of the Kootenai (now Waterton) River. The original barn from the NWMP Horse Ranch established in 1878 in Pincher Creek is also on our site. Father Lacombe’s 1885 Hermitage, constructed of logs from the Beauvais Lake area, is here. Next door stands a quintessential one room country school from the Fishburn District, the first rural school to be established on the southwestern corner of the Canadian Prairies. These are but a few examples of the local historical diversity to be found within our grounds. Also featured this year is a transportation display. A well stocked gift shop, extensive archives, and the tourism information centre are located in our welcoming administration building, Pioneer Place.

Our grounds feature over forty stunning gardens, visual feasts for the eyes. Arranged as both flower and vegetable gardens, they speak of traditional gardens on the Canadian Prairies. The grounds are meticulously maintained and picnic tables & benches are tastefully arranged to take best advantage of the gentle vistas. Pioneer Roots is the newly added community gardens area. These plots are located on recently acquired lands on the far eastern portion of our grounds. Our gardens and specifically this area, won a Community In Bloom award last year, and was specially cited the year before.

Operated by the Pincher Creek & District Historical Society, the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village also promotes the area’s vibrant history through a vast array of innovative programs. Special events are held throughout the calendar year, and we offer school groups unique on site educational sessions. Guided tours are available for booked groups. We are hosting an antique sale during the long weekend in August, “Antiques on The Creek”, featuring a wide variety of private antique vendors from across Western Canada.

The Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village is open year round with summer season hours mid May through early September, 7 days a week, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the winter we are open weekdays 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Fun(d)raiser: A Farley Long Bike Ride

Come ride with our esteemed author and curator, Farley Wuth on a fun and historical bike ride to Beauvais Lake Provincial Park. This fundraising bike rally is in support of the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. Come out and support your local Historical Village to keep the grounds alive!

The $100 entry fee or $100 in pledges includes refreshments along the way, a rally t-shirt, history and a whole day of fun for the entire family!

We will get together at 9:00 am and go over the safety issues and instructions for the trip. Riders will be given a rally t-shirt and safety vest. The ride is not a race but a fun way to spend the day. The day begins at 9:00 am at the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village grounds (located at 1037 Bev McLachlin Drive in Pincher Creek, AB) The rally will be a 40 km round-trip to the lovely Beauvais Lake Provincial Campground and back to Town. The Alberta Parks staff will be on hand at the lake to give a brief talk on the park and its history during an energizing health break! The return trip to Pincher Creek is completely at the discretion of each rider. There will be transportation for riders and bikes back to Town as desired.

Along our route we will have several checkpoints to stop, rest and revitalize with a cool drink. These checkpoints will include a brief history of each area narrated by Farley. At each checkpoint riders will obtain a stamp to be able to continue on the ride. Again this is a family event and not a race. There is no prize for getting there first.

After our trip back to Pincher Creek and Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, there will be games, history, a guided tour of our new bicycle exhibit featuring Dave Glass’s extensive collection, followed by a nutritious BBQ graciously donated by local businesses!

1929 Model A with a Murray body

Ray Degan and a couple of his friends brought a wonderful new addition to the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village today, in the form of a mint 1929 Model A Ford with a Murray 4-door body. Come have a look, it is on display in our front lobby, and it's a thing of beauty. Ray's Model T is also on display here.

Friday Nights @ the Museum

Open Mic night, Karaoke night, Jams, Poetry, Seminars, Classic Vintage Black and White Movies, Readings, Theatre, and much more.
Our Friday night programmes will follow the Pioneer Market.
Every week we will feature something new.
If you have a talent, obsession, specialty, or hobby, we offer you a venue to display it.
If you’re looking for something unusual to do on a Friday evening, our doors will be open, and the popcorn will be warm.

Holiday Train

Blizzard conditions were prevalent but they didn’t cool the spirits of the Holiday Train enthusiasts. About 100 people braved the -40 wind chill to rock out with a super singing Santa, The Odds, and Shaun Verreault of Wide Mouth Mason. A cheque for $1,000.00 was presented to the Pincher Creek food bank along with donations from the crowd. '
Wayne Elliot was the driving force behind finally getting the festive train to stop at the Station. He gave a great speech thanking one and all.

Metis Week Started Sunday

The wind stopped blowing for just a few minutes in Pincher Creek. That was just long enough to raise the flag at the beginning of Metis Week on the grounds of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

This begins a full week of celebrating the culture and heritage of the Metis people. Monday 16-20th have displays, demonstrations and stories. Friday is the day that we will be celebrating Spirit of the Metis. There will be a dinner, dancing, and live entertainment. Come by and help us honour and celebrate this part of Canadian Heritage.
